If you read enough self-help articles, you will see a common piece of advice. When you’re feeling “meh” about your life, think about what you used to love to do as a child, and start doing it again- the idea being that it will invigorate you, change your outlook, and generally cure what ails you.
I must say I was skeptical about achieving such grand results from simply, say, playing on some swings. But then I thought, why not give it a try? To be honest, I was feeling discouraged after my less than spectacular splash back into the dating pool. What did I have to lose?…So I thought: what did I used to do as a kid that was really fun? Earlier this week, I dropped off a box of stuff at Goodwill, a seemingly unremarkable event. But something about it was different. I noted that it included 17 belts, all mine, some dating back to the mid 1980′s. There were funky belts from my 20-something party-girl days, casual belts from my social worker jobs, and conservative belts from my years in the corporate world. It was like visiting my own personal Waist Museum.
And it got me thinking. Firstly, wow, I used to wear a lot of belts. Secondly, wow, I used to wear some ugly belts. And finally, why the hell did I still have all these belts?…I had given away the clothes that the belts went with years ago, why hang on to them? Did I think they’d eventually come back in style and I’d be ahead of the game? (Actually, some of the 80′s belt styles have come back but I have to admit my 80′s waist has not.) No, truth be told, unless someone threw a wacky “Wear a Dozen Belts” theme party, I doubt I would have worn any of them again. Read the rest of this entry »
