There is a great deal of buzz about “detoxing” or “cleansing”. Ellen DeGeneres recently chronicled her Sugar Cleanse on her show. And chances are that you’re friends with someone on Facebook who gives updates on their latest detox cleanse, liver cleanse, or colon cleanse- whether you want to hear about it or not. But what does it really mean? Is is something that would benefit you? And how much do you really need to know about your Facebook friends’ bowel movements?
The truth is that you’re doing a “detox cleanse” all the time. When you breathe, sweat, expel mucus, or go to the bathroom, the body is working to remove waste and toxins. While most people think of the liver and kidneys as doing the heavy lifting, the colon, gall bladder, skin, and respiratory system are no shlumps either. And a cellular detox cleanse is also happening regularly throughout the rest of the body. That being said, I believe that everyone could benefit from some form of detox cleanse. But first, I’d like to address the mainstream misconception that the body doesn’t need it. Read the rest of this entry »
For years, I’d been trying to convince my Mother to get a professional massage. Finally, I gave up. Then last week, out of the blue, she called me to say, “Janet, you were right.” Now, while we all relish hearing that sentence, especially from a spouse or significant other, I must say it’s pretty nice coming from your Mother too. So what was I right about?…My Mom had finally gotten a massage- a chair massage at the mall, not a “lay on a table/full-body one”- but even that had made an indelible impact. “Wow!” “Amazing” “I’ve never felt this relaxed” were just some of the descriptors. As fear of the Swine Flu grows, more and more people want to know what they can do to avoid it. One of the main preventative factors (aside from having a strong immune system from a natural health lifestyle) is said to be hand washing regularly for long enough to kill the virus. How long? Most health professionals recommend 20 seconds of rubbing your sudsy mits together (which I’ve managed to make sound dirty) before you rinse. So come on, be honest…are you a 20 seconder? That’s a pretty long time. I admit it, I’m not. Unless I’ve been handling raw meat, I’m a 6-7 seconder tops.
You may have heard that one way to help you reach that 20 second hand washing mark is to sing a tune in your head, with the most frequent suggestions being “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, “The Alphabet Song”, or “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. And while these are all fine old songs, and practicing “The Alphabet Song” may come in handy should you ever get pulled over for DUI, I fear that these tunes won’t do much to motivate a broad range of ages to actually scrub up. Hello! Welcome to the very first Organic Janet blog post! Wow, this is kind of like a first date…You don’t know me, I don’t know you, and I’ve got some food stuck in my teeth.
I guess I should start by introducing myself. I’m Janet Schultz a.k.a. “Organic Janet” and I’ll be blogging about all things related to organic living and holistic healing. And please don’t let the word “holistic” throw you. This isn’t just a place for woo-woo new agey people in gauzey clothing. (Though they are welcome here too !) Holistic just means “concerned with the whole.” And holistic healing means not just paying attention to your body (what you eat, the products you use, how you exercise, your health care) but also to your mind (what you think and feel) and to your spirit (how you connect to something larger than yourself). And in my opinion (and since this is my blog, I’ll be giving it often!), you’ve got to attend to those three key elements (mind, body, and spirit) to achieve true holistic healing and happiness.
