Organic Janet launches Eco-friendly Products Store!

Hello friends of Organic Janet!

I apologize for my break from blogging. While you may be wondering if I took an extended summer vacation to an exotic island in Bora Bora (I wish!) no, I have instead been busily revamping Organic Janet, as well as being knocked out for a while from unpleasant dental shenanigans…Anyway, I am back and ready to announce the new and improved Organic Janet! In addition to enhanced site navigation and many back-end modifications which improve our visibility, you will find several exciting changes afoot, and more to come.

First, I’d like to introduce you to our newest addition…no, it’s not a baby, but it does feature organic baby products…The Organic Janet Store! Here, you’ll find a variety of eco-friendly home products, as well as natural make-up, organic clothing, natural supplements, and MORE! Better living through chemistry?

In case you missed it, The President’s Cancer Panel (made up of respected mainstream scientists not “crunchy” people like me) recently released a landmark report entitled “Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now” . The 240 page document sounds a major warning bell about the impact of environmental exposures on cancer risk. Definitely not relaxing bedside reading, but if you want to scare the crap out of some kids (or adults) while sitting around a bonfire, it would work well for that.

So what did it say? Well I don’t want to be smug or self-righteous here- okay maybe I do a little- but basically, it tells you to be an Organic Janet. The Panel strongly advises that action be taken at the consumer, industrial, and governmental levels to reduce the risks of cancer posed by chemicals in our food, air, water, and products, as well as from radiation exposure. May I pour you a nice glass of paint?

Spring has sprung and my daffodils are blooming. Wait, that sounds like a euphemism for a different kind of topic…Let’s try: Spring has sprung and THE daffodils are blooming. Yes, that’s better. Along with Spring, comes the unenviable task of Spring Cleaning. And as you scrub those baseboards, wipe down the ceiling fans, and generally ask “Where the hell did all this dust come from?” your thoughts may roam beyond merely sprucing things up, to really changing the look of your home.

One relatively inexpensive way to do this is to freshen up a room with a new coat of paint. But which kind of paint to choose? The vast array of types, textures, and colors, the old stalwart brands coming out with “green” and “low VOC paint” versions…why the whole thing can be quite dizzying, much like being in a closed-up recently painted room. Clean Little Secret (or The Inside Scoop on Grapefruit Seed Extract)

There is certainly no shortage of “dirty little secrets” that get out, whether they’re about celebrities, company practices, or our political system. But when was the last time someone whispered a “clean little secret” in your ear?…
Well, lean in….’cause I’ve got a doozy…

If you’re really leaning in right now, I’m sorry, I was just being silly. Please return to the locked and upright position…Okay, here goes…There is a natural substance, little known outside the “hard-core health food store crowd” that does everything from deodorizing and sanitizing a stinky kitchen trash bin, to preventing food-borne illness from raw meat, to warding of a cold or flu. It is the ultimate green cleaning product. And its name…is Grapefruit Seed Extract. Read the rest of this entry »

Cleaning up your act (or The Benefits of a Whole House Water Filtration System)

What does it mean to “clean up your act” in the realm of natural health? I think that it means taking a look at your various life areas and determining where you can eliminate or minimize your exposure to toxic elements. And these elements might be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. So where to begin? How about with something that you consume everyday, that you couldn’t live without, and that ends up all over your body? If you’re thinking chocolate, well, you have a far more interesting romantic life than I do! No, I’m talking about water.

The water we drink and use for bathing is full of contaminants, both natural and synthetic, which are hazardous to human health. The list includes: chlorine, arsenic, mercury, benzene, chloramine (a blend of chlorine and ammonia), MTBE (a gasoline additive), and chloroform. What are we, living in a 1950′s spy film? How is there enough chloroform in use to end up measurable in our drinking water?…Oh, and don’t forget bacteria, lead, pesticides, prescription medications, and rocket fuel. Yes, rocket fuel. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that you’d rather not be sipping that. By the by, for a satirical take on this topic, please check out this issue of The Unrefined News. Lip Service (or Eco-friendly Products for Chapped Lips)

As much of the country continues to wonder what exactly Old Man Winter is so pissed about, (maybe it’s that we call him “Old Man Winter”?) we alternate between bundling up to brave the windy cold and retreating to the cozy heat of our homes. One common casualty of this routine is dry cracked lips.

The most popular solutions for winter lip woes have familiar names, many of which have been around for decades. Who doesn’t recall the ever-present container of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly in your childhood home? Or rolling on your favorite flavor of Chapstick in grade school? Then graduating to Bonne Bell Lip Smackers or Village Bath Lip Lickers (those yummy smelling balms in the little gold vintage-look tins) in Junior High and High School?…Okay, depending on your age and sex, you may have a different chapped lips timeline, but these products and others such as Blistex, Carmex, and Bag Balm are still the default choices. (Except the Lip Lickers which it appears went the way of the Mood Ring, Pet Rock, and my bell bottoms with butterflies on them.)

But are they the best option? Are there natural eco-friendly products that do just as good of a job? And will going natural cost you more? The answers are: No. Yes. And yes. Let me elaborate. Read the rest of this entry »

Pajama Party (or Where to Find Organic Cotton Pajamas)

Even here in the South, Old Man Winter has arrived. However, since 60 is the new 50 and so on, I hear he’s now going by “Middle-aged Man Winter”. So is there anything worse than being too cold while you sleep? Okay, there are many worse things but it is unpleasant and can disrupt your slumber, which can throw a wrench in your entire next day.

While I suppose really sexy people never wear anything to bed, for most of us, pajamas of some type are de rigueur, especially when temperatures drop. So where can you find cozy eco-friendly sleeping attire without putting a crimp in your budget? Well, I’m glad you asked. Read the rest of this entry »

Hairy Scary (or The Benefits of Natural Hair Dye)

Isn’t Halloween fun? Even for adults, it’s always such a humorous surreal time. I still giggle when I picture myself the year I went as Marge Simpson, tall blue hair and all, dancing the night away with a guy with an equally tall head dressed as a Q-tip…I also remember going as the Bride of Frankenstein in college and how cool I thought it was to put white streaks in my hair. Boy, things have changed…And if like me, you’ve reached that “certain age” when those white streaks in your hair aren’t quite so cool- be you man or woman- then this post is for you.

First, let me state that some people look good going gray. There are women who carry it off well and a lot of men, darn them!- who look downright hot with some graying at the temples. But, I think it’s safe to say that for the majority of women, it’s not a look we embrace. So, should you run to the salon and pay a lot of money for color only to have to go back every month? Or head to the drugstore and pick up a bottle of Clairol Color or Just for Men?…I say, no, no, and no. Read the rest of this entry »
